Pioneer of the Kawa Model

Michael Iwama, PhD, MSc, BScOT, is Dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions.

Dr. Iwama previously was professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at  Augusta University (formerly the Medical College of Georgia).

Dr. Iwama is widely recognized for having developed the Kawa Model (‘Kawa’ is Japanese for ‘River’), the first substantial model of practice in the rehabilitation sciences developed outside the English-speaking world. The Kawa Model is now taught in over 600 health professions education programs internationally and used in practice across six continents. He has emerged as a very important and progressive thinker in the fields of occupational therapy and rehabilitation sciences worldwide.
 
Dr. Iwama draws on his rich experience of acculturating into Eastern and Western social spheres of experience to drive his profound and critical perspectives on culture and its intersections with theory and practice in the rehabilitation sciences.

Breakout Sessions Offer Multiple Relevant CE Opportunities

Breakout sessions covering current topics such as the occupational therapy profession's role in the opiod crisis, managing mental health in educational settings, orthosis fabrication, supporting patients with autism, creative functional treatment techniques and more. To assist with planning, you will be asked to select your breakout sessions when you register. For a detailed look at the available breakout sessions, view the agenda.

  • Please note, meals are not included in registration fees. Attendees are responsible for meals on their own. View nearby restaurants. 
  • Course Evaluations must be completed in the Conference App. Download the App Today to be prepared. You will receive a course code from each session you attend, which you will enter into the evaluation. Your completed evaluation(s) will be used to generate your certificate. Certificates will be emailed shortly after the Conference.
